The New MINI Cooper Paceman

Is there room for yet another MINI variant in the market? Well the marketing gurus at BMW obviously think so and they have done a good job convincing the bean counters at HQ that there is a case to produce such a car.

So in addition to the existing Cooper Hatch, Clubman, Convertible, Countryman, Coupé and Roadster we now have the Paceman to add to the line-up. Will it end there? Well we might yet see the appearance of the Rocketman but probably not for a couple of years yet.

If you think the new car looks like a coupe version of the Countryman then your impression would be pretty close to the reality because the three-door Paceman is built on the same platform as the Countryman and is almost identical in size. So it can accurately be described as a Countryman Coupé.

Looking at the car from the side the designers have gone for a ‘floating’ roof concept which traditionally you would find on Range Rovers, Evoques and more recently on the MINI Coupé. Basically it helps to accentuate the sloping roof line and adds some length visually to the body of the car. The Paceman will be unique amongst its MINI cousins because it will be the only model to have its name emblazoned in large letters across its rear-end.

BMW say the interior of the Paceman is a bespoke design for this model and much attention has been paid to the comfort of rear passengers by way of a ‘lounge seat’ configuration. The seats have been designed they say to give good levels of head, shoulder and knee room but you can’t help feeling that some kind of compromise must have been made in order to accommodate the sloping roof design. Only a road test will tell of course. The rear seats fold down to give extra carrying capacity in the boot of the car which is very handy.

Engine choices will include two petrol options – the standard 1.6 122 bhp four-cylinder or the 184 bhp ‘S’ version found as an option in most of the other models in the MINI line-up. There are also two diesel option the 112 bhp 1.6 litre turbocharged D or the SD with a 2.0 litre and 143 bhp on tap.

Standard equipment will include air conditioning, powered door mirrors, front sports seats, Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Auto Start/Stop (still hate that), Shift Point Display (pointless and distracting) and Brake Energy Regeneration to make sure that the car has its ‘green’ credentials in place.

As usual and like with most other MINI’s you will be able to customise the car to your heart’s content because a myriad of options including bonnet stripes, bigger wheels, special colours etc will be available on offer to prospective purchasers.

The good news is that there is a John Cooper Works version under development too.

The new Paceman is due to go on sale in the UK the 16th march 2013 and prices will start at £18970 on the road.

This outstanding Mini Cooper S has been the subject of a painstaking twenty month restoration to original specification up to concours standards.

Everything has been restored correctly to beautiful condition. The car still runs on ‘wet’ suspension. The correct 4.5″ wheels are fitted as is a regular steering wheel and factory options include reclining seats plus a Triplex ‘Hotline’ rear window.

The engine has been completely rebuilt with a 60 thou+ rebore and a fast road camshaft. The gearbox has been overhauled and a new clutch is fitted. The engine bay components are painted and detailed. All the suspension components are new or refurbished and are powder coated and detailed.

The interior is as new with Newton Commercial carpets and door trims and the restoration is fully documented. The car was registered on 01.01.1971 and was one of only 1572 Mk3 Cooper Ss built. We are told that there are only about 400 cars left and this is chassis number XAD1268486A

Sorry – this car is now SOLD!

Did you know that the so-called MINI ‘Mk 2’ that BMW launched in 2006 is a completely different car in almost every respect from the first version launched in 2001? In order to meet more stringent safety standards and new EU regulations the MINI had to be re-vamped from the ground up. If you’re a MINI anorak you probably know the differences all off by heart but to the vast majority of car purchasers the car looks virtually unchanged. Not so! Firstly, it’s bigger. They’ve added about 2 inches to the length. Every panel has been changed. The ‘C’ pillars are no longer made of glass. The front indicators are contained inside the headlamp unit. The rear lights are slightly larger. The bonnet is higher. The front grille has been re-designed (looks much better now). The 1.6 litre lump has been replaced with another 1.6 litre lump but the new version ekes out another 8 mile per gallon. There’s lot of aluminium used in the bits you can’t see to make it lighter. The boot is bigger. It’s faster and NCAP have given it a five star rating. Phew! And there’s even more to tell about the differences but we’d rather tell you now about a nice black MK 2 that the owner has asked us to market on their behalf. With a full leather interior, digital climate control, chili pack and a panoramic roof the spec is mightily comprehensive. Only 16,000 miles, MINI warranty and the very useful TLC free servicing pack this ‘new-shape’ MINI is looking for a nice friendly new owner. Click here for more details

These cars are just the cutest! The Mini’s perfect proportions make you want to pick one up and put it in your pocket. Considering how cuddly the original version was back in 1959 it has been no mean feat that today’s designers have kept the essence and soul of Issigonis’s (crikey that’s hard to spell!) first generation Mini. Let’s hope that BMW don’t adopt the ‘change for change’s sake’ attitude with the Mini and leave the formula to mature nicely with only minor tweaking. Please don’t do what VW did to the original Golf! Right, so since everyone agrees that the Mini is a highly desirable piece of kit then why not plump for one with a detachable roof? We’re marketing one in Dark Silver for the owner who has since upgraded to a newer model. It’s an ‘S’ with the punchy Supercharged engine and 6-speed gearbox. With Cooper Works Alloys, Side Skirts, Chili Pack, TLC and Aircon it’s a very nicely specified example. Oh and this one has only done 9800 miles. Want more details?
