1986 Gemballa Avalanche

On sale and finished in Pearlescent White with a Black Leather interior this super-rare, left hand drive Gemballa Avalanche was first registered in the UK in April 2018 and was originally supplied brand new to a dealer in Puerto Rico, USA in 1986.

The Porsche 930 Turbo may well have been one of the fastest and most highly regarded sports cars of the 1980’s but a market for specialist tuners emerged during that time with RUF and Gemballa quickly making a name for themselves. Gemballa was founded in 1981 by Uwe Gemballa, an engineer who started out creating bespoke interiors before developing a strong interest in aerodynamics and associated aftermarket products. Gemballa soon turned his attention to producing complete cars based on Porsche 930’s and quickly gained a reputation for outrageous designs combined with wild performance.

The Avalanche debuted in 1985 with a price tag of 390,000 DM (nearly $700,000 in 1989) and quickly became the wheels of choice for some very high-profile celebrities such as the rap-musician Vanilla Ice who immortalised the car in the lyrics of one of his songs – “Of course a Vanilla rides the groove like a Gemballa Porsche”.

Each Avalanche was created by Gemballa with mostly bespoke body panels plus individual interiors filled with the latest technology for the time. Mechanical upgrades were completed by RUF with the cars being finished off by Gemballa to specific customer requirements.  (more…)

1986 RUF Porsche 930 Flatnose BTR

Finished in Guards Red with a Black Leather interior this left hand drive 1986 Porsche 930 Turbo Flatnose was first registered in the UK in April 1989 and originally supplied through Porsche in the Netherlands it was well optioned from new, the most obvious of course being its distinctive body shape. This vehicle started life as a genuine factory Slantnose, Flatnose or ‘Flachbau’.

As if a 911 Turbo Flatnose didn’t stand out from the crowd enough, early in the car’s life it was sent to world-renowned Porsche tuners RUF Automobile GmbH, who are the only recognised partner of Porsche and, in fact, are recognised by the German government as a manufacturer in their own right. The customer opted for a BTR conversion (B = Group B, T = Turbo, R = RUF).

The basics of the RUF BTR start with the engine, which had the original partially-finned cylinder barrels replaced by those with air-cooling fins around their complete diameter. The bore was increased giving a new displacement of 3.4 litres from the original 3.3 litres. RUF added unique Mahle Pistons plus connecting rods and 935 type camshafts. The intake manifold was replaced, as was the exhaust, A larger KKK K27 unit replaced the turbo, and a larger free-flowing intercooler was added along with the installation of a larger oil cooler behind the RUF front spoiler.

RUF also went to great lengths to modify the standard Porsche 930 4-speed transmission by adding a 5th gear with the help of Getrag. Next, the shift linkage was improved, becoming both lighter and more positive than the stock unit. The cars were lowered and the suspension was stiffened, RUF also fitted their single-piece forged alloy wheels, sized 9×17 and 10×17.  (more…)

2013 RUF RtR 'Narrow Body'

RUF Automobile is delighted to offer for sale this extremely rare, right hand drive RUF RtR which is the first of its type to be available in the United Kingdom.

Afficionados of RUF will know that the company is in a unique position to source body shells directly from Porsche and then create its own individual interpretation of a highly capable sports car. All RUF-manufactured cars come with a VIN that starts ‘W09’ since the company is recognised as a manufacturer in its own right by the German authorities.

This Canary Yellow RtR was built in Pfaffenhausen in 2013 and has since recorded only 600 miles since new having mainly been used for shows such as the Geneva Auto Salon and as a press demonstrator by RUF Automobile.

This particular example is rear wheel drive and fitted with a RUF-built 645 hp twin-turbocharged 3.8 litre flat-six boxer engine which is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.  (more…)

1994 Porsche 968 Club Sport

The 968 ‘Club Sport’ or ‘CS’ was Porsche’s attempt to appeal to track-minded enthusiasts by capitalising on the excellent chassis dynamics of the familiar 944/968 series. By lowering the car by 20 mm, tweaking the suspension and stripping off some of the ‘luxury’ elements of the 968 a credible 100 Kg weight-saving was achieved which allowed the CS to sprint to 60 mph in 6 seconds and then on to a top speed of 162 mph. The Club Sport was even crowned ‘Performance Car of the Year’ in 1993 by Performance Car magazine in the UK going some way to establishing the CS as a sports coupe with serious credentials.

This very presentable, right hand drive, 1994 example on sale here is finished in Solid Black with Black cloth interior complemented with red ‘Club Sport’ side-panel script and red painted 17″ Cup alloy wheels. Originally supplied new in New Zealand this 968 CS was imported and registered in the UK in 2016 and comes with an appropriate V5 document.  (more…)

1972 Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS Evocation

Often described as the most definitive 911 ever produced by Porsche, the Carrera 2.7 RS was created as an homologation special and the initial 500 examples were sold within a week of the car’s international debut at the 1972 Paris Show. In order to satisfy the overwhelming public demand for the car an additional 1080 examples were produced and it is believed that only 117 were built in right hand drive form.

It was the first 911 to bear the RS moniker and its lean, purposeful stance was complemented with a rear boot-mounted duck-tail spoiler and extra wide rear arches. The RS was designed to do a specific job and provided a driver experience that was hard to match amongst the car’s contemporaries and even today is acknowledged as being probably the best of a succession of RS models from Zuffenhausen to appear in latter decades.

With its minimalist design and without any fripperies to blunt its performance the RS’s 2.7-litre flat-six powerplant developed a healthy 210 bhp which was enough to propel the lightweight body (which weighed less than 1000 kg) to 60 mph in under 6 seconds.

The right hand drive RS evocation we have here originated as a 911E and was converted to RS spec by racing driver Bob Berridge to race in the 1980’s using Porsche OEM parts which were freely available at that time.  (more…)

 

Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Funny how two letters of the alphabet can mean so much in the car world. Take ‘GT’ for instance. Literally meaning ‘Grand Tourer’, ‘Gran Tourismo’ or ‘Grand Tourisme’ depending on your mother tongue. That pair from the 26 letters of the alphabet have been around since the beginning of time and certainly back in the 50’s and 60’s a ‘GT’ attached to the boot-lid of your car meant you were driving something very special, indeed highly potent. The problem was that by the 70’s every marketing department in every car mass-producer had cottoned-on to the sales potential of the GT moniker to the detriment of what it actually stood for. Too many mundane hatchbacks were eventually labelled ‘GT’ and so the glamour had gone from the badge.

‘RS’ on the other hand has been treated with a little more respect over the years. For much of its existence as a symbol of power it would seem that Ford had hijacked the ‘Rally Sport’ badge for its high-performance models and all of them deserved to wear the badge with pride. But Ford were not the first to the podium with RS because in 1967 Chevrolet released the Camaro RS, so there. Other manufacturers have trodden carefully with the Rally Sport badge including mainstream makers such as Renault with their rather excellent Clio RS and Audi with the RS4 and RS6.

But RS also stands for ‘Renn Sport’ in Germany which literally translated means ‘racing sport’ and if there was one manufacturer who stands proud and tall in the use of the RS badge it is Porsche. Dating back to its first application for the public in 1973 with the Carrera 2.7 RS the company has reserved these two letters for those road cars which have reached the peak of their development.

A 911 GT3 is a very potent car indeed. But add the RS badge and you have the very best that Porsche can produce which means that it is arguably the best car in the so-called GT3 sector.

The 911 GT3 RS kicked-off in 2003 with the 996-based version and it was an unashamedly hard-core version of the ‘normal’ GT3. The focus was on track-day handling with stiffened suspension and so the interest in 911 RS variants began. Today they have become amongst the most highly desirable and collectable of all 911’s.

And so we come to the 911 (997) GT3 RS that we are advertising on behalf of the current owner.

This GT3 RS is a 997 Gen 1 which means that it is fitted with the legendary ‘Mezger’ 3.6 litre flat-six powerplant that has its origins in the successful 962 and GT1 racing engines.

The car is right hand drive, has so far recorded only 6000 miles from new and has also undergone a recent major service and thorough inspection by Porsche Tonbridge to give the car a clean bill of health.

Finished in sought-after limited edition Pure Orange this GT3 RS is in superb condition, has never been raced or tracked and comes with a comprehensive specification as follows:-

Following the car’s inspection Porsche Tonbridge told us that it was one of the most original non-abused GT3 RS’s they had seen for a long time. High praise indeed and the car is unlikely to disappoint anybody looking for a particularly cared-for example.

Considering the very high premiums people are prepared to pay for a 991 GT3 RS these days this future collectable Porsche looks a very sound investment for the longer term.

And so the conversation started with: “I need some advice. I have a yearning for a soft-top that is not limp-wristed, must be fast and capable of putting a smile on my face. I have a budget of £10k and I want to buy the car and fuel for the summer with the money”. The challenge was on.

Our friend is a car enthusiast, drives an expensive Range Rover but luckily he is not too hung-up on badge snobbery. A mid-life crisis was unfolding however and the interest in a drop-top was likely to be short-lived especially when the balmy days of summer had turned into the dark, cold days of November. Residuals had better be half-decent then for whatever was chosen for the summer ride.

A quick search in the usual on-line showrooms revealed a surprising number of candidates that could potentially do the job for the man. So the plan was to produce a Top Ten list of candidates but it almost became a struggle to keep the list down to twenty such is the variety of choice out there.

However, performance and value for money became the cutting tools for slimming down the list and a magic Top Ten was finally accomplished based on the criteria we had set for the car.

Each car in our list will give you a pleasant shove in the back with at least 200bhp on tap (ahem, with the exception of one) and you will get to 60 mph in less than 7 seconds in most of them. Some will make a glorious sound in the process. Out of the £10k budget we have allowed for a grand’s worth of fuel and insurance to get through the summer.

If you are bothered about the name on the boot-lid then some of you might dismiss half of our suggestions with ease. For those of you with an open mind and a financial awareness that precludes any prejudices against driving a car more than two years old you will hopefully concur with our findings.

For added measure the cars we have listed are cars you can buy today (as long as they haven’t been sold before you read this article) so we have tried to make the choice as real as possible.

And so, in no particular order:

Honda S2000

Honda S2000 – we sold quite a few of these back in the day and even today we can marvel at the sheer flexibility of Honda’s VTEC engine and its ability to rev up to 8000 rpm with ease. Depending on the year model of choice up to 247 hp will be available from the 2.0 litre and the later cars have nicer alloys. Graphite grey or black with a red or black/red interior are popular colours. This particular example would fit the bill very nicely at £9000.

Audi TT 3.2 V6 Quattro – The shape of the Mk 1 TT has stood the test of time well and Audi has struggled to improve on a design that was somehow just right at the very start of production. The silky-smooth V6 version offers 247 hp and married with the superb DSG gearbox this TT will eat up the miles with ease. Black and silver are preferred colours for the TT and this one looks spot on for £8246.

nissan-350z-v6-roadster-124545272-3Nissan 350Z V6 Roadster – Shamelessly copying from the TT’s curvy shape but still managing to retain its own identity the 350Z dishes up a wholesome 287 hp. The 3.5 litre V6 powerplant also produces a nice snorty note which means driving with the roof down at every opportunity. Some colours can make the car look a little dumpy but this lovely burnt orange example for £8295 looks a peach.

bmw-z4-roadster-z4-si-sport-roadster-e4-S1870789-1BMW Z4 3.0 – Sadly the M Roadster was out of reach of our budget but the lusty 262 hp straight-six 3 litre is a capable substitute. Manuals are okay-ish but the splendid 6-speed auto box with flappy paddles makes for entertaining driving. Black or dark grey are good choices for colours and this low-mileage Z4 for £8395 ticks all the boxes for us.

 

mercedes-slk32-amg-slk32-amg-125280955-1Mercedes Benz SLK32 AMG – If there is one winner in the horsepower stakes amongst our choices then the SLK32 AMG romps home with first prize. The supercharged six-cylinder produces no less than 349 hp and (on paper at least) is likely to be the quickest car on our short-list. The engine noise is beguiling and this version of the SLK distances itself comfortably from the limp-wristed image of the lesser-powered SLK’s. Choose colours wisely and avoid the strange reds, blues and yellows – stick with safe silver or black like this one being advertised for £8950.

Chim4TVR Chimaera 4.0 – Such is the popularity of older TVR’s these days that is was surprising that we could find even one suitable car to include in our list. A 5.o Chimaera was our first target but finding anything less than a basket-case for under £10k was impossible. The 4.0 V8 however will rustle up 240 hp and will undoubtedly make the best noise of any of the cars on our list. The V8 soundtrack is intoxicating and you will be looking for excuses to find a tunnel on every trip. Any colour will do and our choice is this lovely-looking blue example on offer at £8999.

boxster32Porsche Boxster 3.2 – On the other hand there is a large choice (by comparison) of Boxsters out there so the key is to go for the 258 hp 3.2 and not the 2.7. Also look for the latest version you can find for the money. These cars are (almost) bullet-proof and wear the miles well whilst offering brilliant handling and eager performance that will put a large grin on your visage. Most will be found in tasteful, blues, blacks or silver and we found this splendid Seal Grey low-mileage 3.2 on offer at £8995

alfa-romeo-spider-jts-v6-S1850277-1Alfa Romeo Spider V6 – Before you start mumbling about the unreliability etc of Italian cars take a deep breath and consider the virtues of the Alfa Spider. It is arguably the prettiest car on our list. An Alfa that has been cared for has been owned by somebody who loves their cars. For that reason they would have made sure that maintenance and any failed bits would have been taken care of under their stewardship. Our budget allows for the purchase of a 260 hp V6 version which is probably the best V6 engine ever made. Oh yes it is. Let your heart rule your head and be different with this classic Alfa Red example for a lowly £8250.

bmw-e46-m3-00-06-m3-smg-S1862065-10BMW M3 – The second BMW to appear on our list (not a surprise really) and it’s the E46 M3 with its energetic 330 hp straight six powerplant. The car is a joy to drive and once again this is a car that we have a great deal of experience with (including the earlier E36 M3). Service history is everything with these cars and avoid anything with missing BMW history in the early part of its life. The manual 6-speed gearbox is our preferred choice but the SMG sequential transmission is fun to live with. Most colours look good on the car and this Mystic Blue M3 looks very appealing at £9000.

mediaI3W5IUWOMG MGB – Come on, if you are going to live the dream of classic open-top motoring then the MBG is still top of the list. Original early car values have gone ballistic now and you would need £20k to buy a decent example. For our budget we are looking at the later rubber-bumper cars which have been converted back to chrome and all of the US-spec rubbish bits removed. Performance will be underwhelming from the 95 hp 1.8 litre engine but that doesn’t matter because it will keep up with modern traffic all day long and make a nice noise whilst doing so. How about this Tartan Red model with chrome wire wheels for £8200? Could be worth a bit more than that by the time you sell it too!

So there you have it, a chance to let the wind blow through your hair this summer without breaking the bank. Most of the cars listed would depreciate by very little if anything at all and one or two might actually be worth a little bit more by the end of the year.

Which one did our friend go for? He hasn’t made up his mind yet since we gave him too much choice!
