It is one of the 20th century’s most iconic automobiles and has been an inspiration to generations of automobile designers and enthusiasts; legendary movie car Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has fueled childhood dreams for more than four decades.  This is a rare chance to own a piece of fully functioning movie magic.

Though only six cars were designed and built for the legendary eponymous 1968 film and are exceedingly rare, this Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at auction is a fully licensed replica (with documentation from MGM Solicitors, Forrester Ketley & Co.).  Begun as a labour of love in 2000 by its creator Tony Green, this magnificent car is true to the original in every way, including original period brass lamps and a brass snake horn that came directly from one of the original six film cars. The result of three years of painstakingly meticulous work, this car was built using the finest engineers and master boat builders who were tru e to the original in every way. The car will be sold with all history including photographic reference, all receipts, MOT’s and blueprint drawings.

Measuring in at 18 feet long, 6 feet wide and 1.5 tons this Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a large and impressive vehicle. The car is road legal, has the registration number ‘GEN 22’ and is registered with the DVLA as ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’. Power comes from a 3L V6 Ford engine with a BorgWarner automatic gearbox. It has not been driven in the last 18 months and could do with a service and sympathetic restoration, but it drives and naturally causes a stir wherever it goes!

One of the most coveted cars from the silver screen, the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang vintage racing car was designed by Ken Adam and built by Ford Racing Team. For the film version, only six cars were created, including one fully functional road-going car – which recently came up for auction with an estimate of $1,000,000 – 2,000,000.

Mr. Green owned and used the car until 2007, when it was acquired with finance by a private collector. In September 2005, Mr Green approached Bonhams for a valuation and they were quoted as saying that the “car has potential to raise considerable income” and features “coachwork of the highest quality”. They believed the car could reach £250,000 at auction. Mr Green decided to keep the car at that time and only parted with it in June 2007 for £250,000.

Once under new ownership, the private collector wanted to make some more improvements by taking the car to ‘Design For Sport’ – where they specially designed and custom built automatically opening wings, rising propellers and rotating blades. This involved fitting a microprocessor control unit with wireless key control in to the wicker picnic basket on to the back of the car. These striking components are beautifully integrated and truly add to the magic of this special automobile. The cost of these improvements totalled some £48,720.

The film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a true Hollywood classic, and has been a beloved part of many millions of childhoods for decades. Originally written by James Bond author, Ian Flemming, the 1968 film script was written by Roald Dahl and Ken Hughes. Whilst the car was undoubtedly the star of the film,  the lead character was played by  Dick Van Dyke and the Director was Albert R. Broccoli – who was the  co-producer of the James Bond series of films.

It is being offered for sale via an online auction starting on Sunday 4th September to coincide with the cars appearance at the Chelsea Auto Legends Show on the same day.

THE BIGGEST SHOW ON WHEELS

Le Mans cars and supercars, E-types and Mini Coopers, stars of track and stage, rare cars and rally cars… Chelsea AutoLegends has them all!

London’s biggest show on wheels is almost here. On Sunday 4 September, the Royal Hospital in Chelsea will host Chelsea AutoLegends, a showcase of automotive excellence that promises displays of some of the most desirable, rare, exciting and historically important cars ever made.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, the 2011 edition of Chelsea AutoLegends has even more to see and do. There are special displays devoted to the iconic Jaguar E-type and Mini Cooper – both celebrating their 50th birthday this year – plus a central display of Le Mans racers and cavalcades of supercars and classic bikes.

There will be classic cars owned by members of the public on display, while a host of motor sport personalities will visit the show during the day. There’s plenty for the family, too, with fairground rides, simulators and a couple of famous cars with film star class.

And visitors who really want to soak up the atmosphere are encouraged to dig out their kaftans, bell-bottoms, beads and bells and join in with the Swinging Sixties theme, remembering the days when Chelsea’s groovy Kings Road was the hub of global fashion, design and pop music.

Chelsea AutoLegends is held in the grounds of the imposing Royal Hospital in Chelsea, and helps to raise funds for the resident Chelsea Pensioners. Gates open at 10am on Sunday and close at 4pm.

Among the highlights are:

Le Mans: A mouth-watering selection of racing cars that have competed at the most famous race in the world, the Le Mans 24 Hours. The display will chart the history of the event from the Bentleys of the 1920s, through the Jaguar D-types and scarlet Ferraris of the fifties and sixties right up the modern era with high tech prototypes from current pacesetters Aston Martin, Aston Martin and Peugeot.

Jaguar E-type: It might be 50 years old, but the E-type still turns heads… but then no less an authority than Enzo Ferrari once called it the most beautiful car in the world. Some of the world’s most important E-types will be at Chelsea AutoLegends, including I VHP, chassis number 1; ECD 400, the first E-type race winner; and 848 CRY, the E-type that featured in The Italian Job movie.

Supercars: New for 2011 is the PistonHeads Supercar Run in association with The Sunday Times. Some of the world’s rarest and most exotic cars will be joining the show after a Sunday morning run through London. McLarens and Moslers will join Lamborghinis and Ferraris, Koenigseggs, Aston Martins and Porsches in a cavalcade leaving the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall after breakfast and arriving at the show at around midday.

Classic bikes: Bikes and bikers of all shapes and sizes will also be arriving at the show during the morning after a ride from the famous Ace Café on the North Circular. Reflecting military links with the Royal Hospital, the cavalcade will be led by the Royal British Legion Riders Branch and will park up in a dedicated display area of the show. Eight times World Champion Phil Read MBE will be one of the many motor sport stars at the show, too.

The best of the best: That claim is made by Autocar which, earlier this year, celebrated the publication of its 5,000th road test with a poll of the most important tests in the magazine’s long history. The top ten cars will be on display, headed by the 3.8-litre E-type Jaguar fhc registered 9600 HP… the very car the magazine tested 50 years ago.

Invicta: Rare supercar from the 1930, the last examples of the Invicta marque were built in Flood Street, not far from the show. In its day, the Invicta was technically advanced, fast and reliable and considered a genuine rival to Bentley. Among the examples on show will be the car that won the 1931 Monte Carlo Rally in the hands of Donald Healey.

Rally cars: Monsters from the Group B era will also be on display. Rally winning cars like the Audi Sport Quattro and Lancia Delta S4 and 037 will be there along with the mind-blowing Metro 6R4 plus other genuine ex-works cars like the Toyota Celica Turbo and the more recent Ford Focus WRC.

The Patrons: Back in the fifties and sixties, British privateer teams – known as the Patrons – took on the might of the works teams… and often won. A special tribute to Rob Walker, Colonel Ronnie Hoare, Tommy Sopwith and John Coombs will include cars they made famous, such as the 1961 TT-winning Ferrari 250 GT SWB driven by Stirling Moss. A fund-raising dinner will be held in the Great Hall of the Royal Hospital on the eve of the event in aid of the Chelsea Pensioners, attended by Sir Stirling and others with strong historic and family connections.

Mini Cooper: It’s not just the E-type that’s celebrating a 50th birthday this year. The Mini Cooper often humbled much bigger machines on track and rally stage, and among the giant killers on display will be two ‘Monte Carlo’ Minis celebrating the ‘Little Brick’s’ dominance on the event in the 1960s. Monte winner Paddy Hopkirk is another of the motor sport legends who has confirmed his presence.

Track stars: The glory days of 1970s touring car racing will be remembered with a display of Group 1 and Group 2 racers from BMW, Ford and Alfa Romeo, including a 3.0 CSL ‘Batmobile’, a ‘Cologne’ Capri and an Alfa GTam. There’ll also be famous machines from two great British teams of the fifties and sixties: cars (and the renowned transporter) wearing the metallic blue of Ecurie Ecosse and a host of Fords wearing the red and gold of Alan Mann Racing.

Personalities: It’s not all hardware at the show. Some of motor sport’s great names will be on hand to share memories, including event patron Sir Stirling Moss, plus bike legend Phil Read, rallying heroes Paddy Hopkirk and Russell Brooks and Le Mans winner Richard Attwood. TV chef James Martin was one of the many familiar faces seen at last year’s show and he’s returning. Expect some more faces from the world of TV, music and film, too.

Entertainment: Chelsea AutoLegends is a show for the entire family and not just the petrolheads. The organisers have laid on fairground rides and an F1 simulator, plus there’ll be two cars from the world of film – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the Pink Panther car. A wide selection of trade stands will be offering everything from Cuban cigars and classic travel to the very latest supercar, while pampering is available for those seeking relaxation. Adding to activities there will be a silent auction raising further funds for the Royal Hospital. There also are food stalls and bars, and plenty of space for visitors to bring their own picnics.

Showground cars: And there’s more. There’ll be classic cars and bikes wherever you look. More than 200 members of the public are bringing along their pride and joy for all to enjoy. Expect Bristols to rub shoulders with BMWs, Ferraris to share turf with Fords, and MGs to mingle with Maseratis. Cars will run from exotics like a 1955 Gullwing Mercedes via rarities like a Swallow Doretti to a humble ‘Only Fools and Horses’ Reliant Regal Supervan.

“Last year’s inaugural Chelsea AutoLegends was a huge success but we have pulled out all the stops to make the 2011 show even better. There’s more to see and more to do with even more cars on show,” said Chelsea AutoLegends chairman, Eric Verdon-Roe.

And the last word should go to one of the greatest names from motorsport, 16-times Grand Prix winner, event patron and long-time Londoner, Sir Stirling Moss. “London is the centre of the world, a place with a real pulse. It is entirely fitting that somewhere as great as our capital has a show as dynamic as Chelsea AutoLegends,” he said.

E-TYPES ON PARADE

Some of the most historically significant examples of the E-type Jaguar will be celebrating the model’s 50th birthday at Chelsea AutoLegends in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea on Sunday 4 September. Back in the Swinging Sixties, the car was one of the trendiest icons seen on Chelsea’s ‘groovy’ Kings Road and its golden anniversary will be marked in style with what’s almost certainly the largest and most significant display of E-types ever seen in London.

Among the E-types expected are early examples, racing versions and lightweight specials. Almost all are known to aficionados by their number plates.

They include:

9600 HP– 3.8 FHC, the world’s oldest E-type, 1960 prototype, original Geneva Show car and the Autocar 150mph road test car

1 VHP­ – Chassis number 1

1600 RW – The first E-type sold, originally owned by Jaguar’s race team manager and later chairman ‘Lofty’ England

FPL 660C– 4.2 FHC owned by legendary motoring journalist Denis Jenkinson

EE 400– Early ‘Project ZP’ competition car owned by Tommy Sopwith’s Equipe Endeavour and raced by Mike Parkes, now registered 616 AUF. Sister car to…

ECD 400– The first E-type race winner, driven by Graham Hill at Oulton Park in April 1961

4 WPD– The John Coombs entered E-type that finished third (when registered BUY 1) in that debut race in the hands of Roy Salvadori

49 FXN– The ultimate version of the three low drag coupés produced

CUT 8 – CUT 6, CUT 7 and CUT 8 were all famous Jaguars raced by privateer Dick Protheroe and his wife. CUT 8 is a FHC

848 CRY– The 12th roadster and the most active E-type racer in 1961. Subsequently featured in the Michael Caine movie, The Italian Job

In addition E2A, the prototype that sits between the D- and E-types, will be on display along with the famous ‘Lindner/Nocker’ lightweight low drag competition car and a pair of early models, chassis numbers 24 and 84.

And there will be up to a dozen other, later examples of the E-type entered by members of the public for display in a special Showgrounds area at the event.

Among the men behind the E-type, one of the most famous is test development engineer Norman Dewis. Although he was involved in the inception of many Jaguars over the years, it is his role in the birth of the E-type that is probably most significant. Dewis, now aged 91, will be one of the many human stars at Chelsea AutoLegends.

“We are delighted to welcome Norman to the show,” said Eric Verdon–Roe, Chairman of Chelsea AutoLegends. “He helped make the E-type the icon that it is and it is only right that he should be a special guest at our 50th birthday celebrations for the car.”

Now in its second year, Chelsea AutoLegends is packed with important and rarely seen competition cars. There will be displays devoted to Le Mans racers, Group B rally cars and classic bikes. Other displays will tell the ‘Made in Chelsea’ Invicta story and will relive the 1970s era of touring car racing.

There will be cavalcades of supercars and motorcycles arriving at the show during the day plus a special tribute to the Mini Cooper – which, like the E-type, is 50 years old this year.

The ten most significant road cars of all times, as voted by Autocar magazine (and, yes, that includes an E-type – 9600 HP) will be on official display with countless other classics in the car parks. It’s not just cars but people, too. As well as Norman Dewis, Event Patron Sir Stirling Moss OBE will be there along with multiple motorcycle World Champion Phil Read and rally hero Russell Brookes.

And in keeping with the venue, just a stone’s throw from the Kings Road, and the many displays from the Swinging Sixties it is hoped that visitors will get into the spirit of the day by wearing mini skirts, kaftans and bell-bottoms and flowers in their hair.

Chelsea AutoLegends – ‘Patron’ Sir Stirling Moss OBE – is staged on the South Grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, on Sunday 4 September 2011. This year’s Chelsea AutoLegends builds on the huge success of last year’s inaugural show and once again will centre around a display of iconic cars that have contested the Le Mans 24 Hours, the world’s most famous motor race.

Adding to the celebrations there will be a special focus on the much-loved cars of the Swinging Sixties – a decade when Chelsea’s groovy Kings Road was the hub of global fashion, design and pop music. Chelsea AutoLegends also raises funds for Chelsea Pensioners, residents of the Royal Hospital.

He might have retired (at the age of 81, no less!) from competitive motor racing, but Sir Stirling Moss OBE is still living life in the fast lane.

And one of the motor racing legend’s first public appearances since hanging up his famous ‘Herbert Johnson’ – his white, open-faced crash helmet from the 1960s – will be as Patron of Chelsea AutoLegends.

It’s a fitting link. Moss has lived in London all his working life while Chelsea AutoLegends has been described as London’s greatest show on wheels. It will be held at the Royal Hospital Chelsea on Sunday 4 September.

“London is the centre of the world, a place with a real pulse. It is entirely fitting that somewhere as great as our capital has a show as dynamic as Chelsea AutoLegends,” said the 16-time Grand Prix winner.

Sir Stirling’s top flight motor racing career ended in a high speed accident at the Goodwood circuit in 1962, but a more recent career in historic motor sport ended in less dramatic circumstances, this June.

Halfway through qualifying his Porsche RS61 for the Le Mans Legends event, he suddenly realised it was time to call it quits. He drove back to the pits, got out of the car and announced his retirement. “I scared myself and I always said that, if I felt I was not up to it or that I was getting in the way of fellow competitors, then I would retire,” he said.

While he might no longer be driving in anger, Moss still plans to be involved in historic motorsport events, giving demonstrations runs or, as at Chelsea AutoLegends, being involved as a figurehead.

“I went to the first AutoLegends show last year and loved it. There were so many fabulous cars and familiar faces there, that I was delighted when they asked me to be Patron this year.

“London deserves a show like this and, if you miss it, you’ll be missing something special.”

Among the many iconic cars on display will be the very Ferrari 250GT SWB that Moss drove to victory in the 1961 Tourist Trophy at Goodwood. It was entered in the race by another motor racing legend, the late Rob Walker.

“Rob Walker was a true enthusiast but also a damn good team manager. And in his passport where it said ‘Profession’ he had written ‘Gentleman’. That gives you an idea of the sort of chap he was.”

Walker, Colonel Ronnie Hoare, Tommy Sopwith and John Coombs were all superb examples of team ‘Patrons’ – private entrants who took on, and often beat, the works teams in the 1950s and 1960s.

All four will be honoured at Chelsea AutoLegends with an invitation only dinner the evening before the event, with special displays of some of the most important cars linked to the teams. For Moss – a special guest at the dinner – memories will be stirred not just by the TT-winning Ferrari, but also by the 1959 Cooper Climax T51 in which he won the Portuguese and Italian Grands Prix in that year.

Other special themes at the show will include displays of Le Mans cars over the years, Group B rally cars and classic bikes. There will be cavalcades of supercars and motorcycles arriving at the show during the day, plus special tributes to the Jaguar E-type and Mini Cooper – both 50-years-old this year.
