After its international public debut at the Geneva Motor Show last April, the Alfa 4C Concept will be exhibited at the 64th International Motor Show in Frankfurt next month in a new and exclusive ‘fluid metal’ exterior colour that dynamically enhances the smooth and sinuous lines of the car.

In recent months the project has been refined and enriched with technical contents to enhance the dynamic excellence of the Alfa 4C Concept. Vehicle weight is confirmed at around 850kg, the engine delivering more than 200 bhp and a power to weight ratio less than 4kg per HP – traits worthy of a true ‘supercar’.

The Alfa 4C Concept showcases the formula of the two-seater, rear-wheel drive coupé with its central engine, a length of approximately 4 metres and a wheelbase of less than 2.4 metres.  These dimensions on the one hand emphasise the Alfa 4C Concept’s compact attributes, whilst on the other accentuate its agility.

The Alfa 4C Concept uses technology and materials derived from the 8C Competizione – carbon, aluminium, rear-wheel drive – and technology from Alfa Romeo models currently on sale: the 1750 turbo petrol engine with direct injection, the ALFA TCT twin dry clutch transmission; and all the best of Alfa’s DNA technology, obviously including the Alfa DNA dynamic control selector.

The Land Rover DC100, a modern interpretation of the iconic Land Rover Defender will make its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Land Rover also confirms today, that production of a new Defender is intended for 2015.

Commenting on the Land Rover DC100 concept car, Gerry McGovern, Director of Design, Land Rover said: “Replacing the iconic Defender is one of the biggest challenges in the automotive design world; it is a car that inspires people worldwide.  This isn’t a production-ready concept but the beginning of a four-year journey to design a relevant Defender for the 21st century.”

John Edwards, Global Brand Director, Land Rover added:”Loved the world over for its simple, honest and distinctive design, we are determined that the new Defender will be true to its heritage, while meeting the requirements of a changing global market.

We plan to engage with existing and potential customers to help us finalise the details of the new vehicle.  One thing’s for sure, it’s going to be an exciting journey, and we can’t wait to get going.”

The Land Rover DC100 concept builds upon the essential elements of the car’s character and allows Land Rover to open the debate and inspire people to dream about the Defenders of the future. The next chapter in the Defender story will unfold at 09:15 hrs (CET) on September 13, 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Jaguar XF – ‘Car of the Decade’

The Jaguar XF has been announced as Auto Express Driver Power ‘Car of the Decade’.

Over a period of 10 years readers of Auto Express have been invited to participate in the Driver Power survey and evaluate the car they own.  The detailed survey encompassed many aspects of vehicle ownership – from reliability to dealer performance, to design, handling and ease of use.

In that time over 300,000 readers participated with hundreds of individual cars being tested. The Jaguar XF emerged as Number One.

Acting Editor of Auto Express, Graham Hope, presented Dr. Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover and Andrew Whyman, Chief Programme Engineer, XF, with the Award in front of staff at the Castle Bromwich Factory.

Dr. Speth commented: ‘We are humbled by Jaguar owners voting in such a way to rate the XF as the number one car in the UK. It’s a tremendous achievement for everyone in Jaguar – from the people here at Castle Bromwich who have been building the car since 2008 to the engineers, the designers and the dealers. I am very proud to receive the award on their behalf.’

Also present to accept the Award was Andy Whyman, Chief Programme Engineer.  Gathered at the presentation were technicians from the Castle Bromwich product line as well as the very first XF ever produced sitting alongside a new XF, fresh off the line.

Graham Hope, Editor of Auto Express, commented: ‘Jaguar’s XF is a thoroughly deserving winner of our Car of the Decade.  Over the past 10 years, more than 302,000 Auto Express readers have told us what they like and dislike about their cars, and no model has demonstrated such consistent all-round ability as the XF.  It’s fantastic to drive and extremely well built – a tribute to the skilled workforce at Castle Bromwich.  I am absolutely delighted that a British-built car has won this award, and fully expect the latest version of the XF, with its new diesel engine, to achieve even more success in the years ahead.’

Since 2008 over 37,000 examples of the XF have been sold in the UK.  A relentless programme of engineering improvements have meant that the XF has remained highly competitive in its class.  On September 1 the most efficient XF yet, the new 2.2-litre Diesel model, will go on-sale.  Capable of travelling in excess of 800-miles on a single tank of diesel and emitting 149 g/km of CO2, the XF 2.2 combines economy with the performance, refinement and dynamic ability expected of a modern Jaguar.  Like the rest of the XF range it benefits from a series of aesthetic changes both inside and out to lend it a fresh, elegant new look.

Well deserved we think!

Exceptional cars and extraordinary aircraft are a regular treat at the annual Goodwood Revival, being held this year from 16-18 September.  However, trains are a far less common sight at the world’s most authentic historic motor sport meeting; until now!

In just three weeks time, trains will be very much in evidence as a trio of blushing brides walk down the aisle in full period wedding dress at the ‘St. Charles Chapel of Love,’ as  Goodwood stages three mock weddings from the 1948-1966 Revival era.

A gaggle of Goodwood’s GAG Actors will be playing their parts in the wedding ceremonies and receptions at the main Revival pedestrian entrance gate, as a series of brides and grooms attempt to tie the knot, with mixed degrees of success!

The Revival wedding party characters will form part of the 80-strong troop of GAG (Goodwood Actors Guild) actors and actresses, all carefully selected to add a sense of theatre to the Revival, following an exhaustive round of auditions.  These actors all become members of GAG, set up specifically to add to the authentic atmosphere of the Revival.

The Goodwood Revival gives a chance for all visitors to revel in the romance of motor racing as it used to be. The lovingly restored Goodwood Motor Circuit is unchanged from its heyday, and great lengths are taken to ensure that everything on the site is exactly as it was.

All Goodwood staff and GAG members dress in appropriate period clothing from the 1940s, 50s and 60s, and each year the vast majority of competitors and spectators get into the effervescent Goodwood spirit by dressing the part, considering it all part of the fun.

All around the Goodwood Motor Circuit site, there are many actors, role-playing and acting out scenes from a bygone era.  Spivs selling nylons and watches from beneath their coats; Mods and Rockers hanging out and dancing, then being ‘moved on’ by the local bobbies; comedic workmen preparing to dig a hole in the most inappropriate place; iconic figures, Butlin’s Redcoats, and even the Dad’s Army Home Guard are all to be found at the Revival.

Other GAG members act as airline captains, with a string of adoring air hostesses in tow, whilst reporters and photographers chase the playboy set for the latest scoop, oblivious to the ‘happy campers’ munching on their Scotch eggs and tea cakes beside their 1950s caravans. There’s sure to be much more fun in store over the three fabulous days of the Goodwood Revival this year.
