Driving the new SL you can’t help noticing two things ahead of you. The bonnet bulges. They are obvious and they nicely complement the dashing air vents just ahead of the windscreen. Looking at an image of the first generation SL from the mid-50’s you can see exactly where the inspiration came from and that is no bad thing. Not many bonnets are that interesting quite frankly but the one on this SL350 is a thing of beauty.

What SL350 we hear you say? Well, we are marketing a 2009 example in Carbonite Black with only 4000 miles on the clock on behalf of the owner. This SL is extremely well-specified and comes with a stunning set of 5-spoke alloys and the desirable Sports Package as well as the usual COMAND satnav and mutlimedia system including CD, DVD, Bluetooth and i-Pod functionality. The SL350 features the creamy-smooth V6 in MB’s range which whips 315 horses into action so performance is more than adequate.

The original purchase price of this of this SL was in excess of £72k just under a year ago and can now be purchased for a smidgen under £50k! A not inconsiderable saving indeed.

When you think of Portsmouth it is quite likely that images of the sea, HMS Victory and possibly a football team that has managed to escape relegation this season all spring to mind. The Mercedes McLaren SLR however, wouldn’t.

But Portsmouth is where the body of Merc’s supercharged lightweight champion was crafted in carbon-fibre at McLaren Composites before being shipped off to the parent company in Woking for final assembly.

The boys from Pompey done good and since they have now built 3500 bodies for the SLR, Mercedes have called time on the car and the carbon-fibre wizards are probably hard at work on the forthcoming P111 project. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, another Pompey lad, would have been proud of them.

In the meantime feast your eyes on the SLR because it is indeed a thing of beauty and its status as a future classic is virtually guaranteed. All the boxes are ticked as far as the performance stats for the Roadster version are concerned. 626 bhp, 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds and a max speed of 206 mph.

Mercedes claim that you can still have a natter with your mate in the passenger seat at speeds up to 124 mph with the roof down! But then who wants to talk when the glorious sound of the  5.4 litre supercharged V8 is wailing in the background.

Top Gear likened the noise to that of a Messerschmitt ME-109 fighter plane. Awesome. Carbon-ceramic brakes and trick-spoilers creating downforce help bring the beast to a halt in seconds. The brakes even self-dry in the wet! This is indeed a clever car.

It is also another rarity that will not appear too often in the classified ads but we know of two, that’s right two, black new unregistered Roadsters that have come up for sale. Please give us a call on ++44 1474 854490 for more details or click here and we will contact you.

Was this the best S-Class ever? Well if the ruling classes were setting the benchmark in the 80’s then the answer is a definite ‘yes’. Dignitaries and high-ranking politicians the world-over chose the W126 as their mode of transport by default. Sitting in the back seat it is easy to see why. Even today the way the car simply glides over the road suggests it is riding on a cushion of air. This particular 1988 SEL which is being sold on behalf of the owner has had a mint spent on it since 2004. The interior has had a complete re-fit with its re-upholstered seats, fresh carpets and interior trim. Externally the car benefits from good quality paintwork, new trim and refurbished wheels – all told a whopping £18,000 has been spent over the last few years which says something for the enthusiasm and commitment of the previous owners. Even with 158k on the clock the engine starts on the button and pulls like the Orient Express. Travel in first-class style and comfort with the rear blinds pulled, feet on the foot-rest and rear seats reclined  – and all this for £6000! Click here for more details.
