So the ‘will it or won’t it’ be the new DBS has finally been launched with the name Vanquish written large on its birth certificate. Considering this car is second only to the One-77 in terms of power output in Aston’s range it seems only fitting that the moniker ‘Vanquish’ should be selected for this model – it just sounds a lot more tasty.

Apart from some remodelling of the now-familar elegant flowing lines of most Aston Martins to conjure up a family resemblance to the One-77 it is in the engine department that AM claims it has made the most revisions. Interestingly though, every panel on the Vanquish is made out of carbon fibre too so the power to weight ratio is highly respectable on the new car. Cabin and boot space is also improved over the DBS.

The 6.0 V12 has a peak power output of 565 bhp which makes it Aston’s most powerful production model and currently only outdone by the limited-edition One-77 in the power stakes. 0-62 mph is achieved in 4.1 seconds and top speed is quoted as 183 mph which won’t break any records but Aston Martins have always been about high-speed, long-legged, mile-munching GT’s than hyperactive street racers. The revised V12 is also claimed to offer better economy and improvements on emissions compared to the previous engine.

It is always a time for anxiety when a manufacturer starts to dabble with a design that is universally accepted as ‘beautiful’. The Vanquish has managed to keep that recognisable Aston elegance with an added sprinkle of aggression in the new design which is likely to please the most critical of AM fans out there. We like it anyway.
