Any colour as long as it’s black!

Ahh…the E39 BMW M5. One of those cars that stirs the soul and easily contends for the title ‘Best Sports Saloon Ever Made’. Now we don’t often come across these last-of-the-old-shape M5’s so to have two on offer in the same colour at the same time was worthy of a family photo. Not both the same spec mind you but both with good histories and nice mileages in the sort of condition that inspires confidence regarding the previous owners’ attention to care and maintenance.

Does the E39 V8 M5 deserve the accolades thrust upon it by the press and car nuts alike? Well, just try and think of one car that will out-drag most ‘supercars’ to 100 in 11 seconds (in theory, officer) while the missus is doing her nails up front and the kids are playing with their iPods in the back. Nope – neither can we. There must have been a million words written on blogs and forums about this car but apart from ‘brilliant’, ‘fantastic’, ‘awesome’ and ‘incredible’ you wont find many other words used to express an opinion on the M5. Is the E60 M5 any better? You can’t dispute the technological effort gone into the new model but in the real world does it offer a better drive in any respect? The E39 is the sort of car that anybody can get into and drive i.e. turn the key, select first gear and enjoy! Have BMW let technology get in the way of a simple driving experience with the E60 – who knows? Only time and sales figures will tell. The Head-Up Display is brilliant though.

One final thought – these two Black E39’s can be bought for just one E60 with similarish mileage. Just think, matching ‘his and her’s’ number plates; no more arguing over who is going to drive; no more ‘borrowing’ the car for the weekend. There could even be a discount for multiple purchases!

Did you know?………..BMW M GmbH (previously: BMW Motorsport GmbH) is a subsidiary of German car manufacturer BMW AG. Established in May 1972 with just eight employees, it grew to 400 employees by 1988. BMW M, also known as M-Technik or just “M” (for Motorsport) was initially created to facilitate BMW’s racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. The first racing project was BMW’s 3.0 CSL; in the late 1970s the first modified street legal road cars were produced for the contracted racecar drivers as their personal vehicles. BMW M also supplied the 6.1 litre V-12 engine that powers the McLaren F1.
