The development of the hybrid 918 Spyder continues apace with the completion of the first prototypes and production planned for September 2013. First customers should receive their cars before the end of the same year according to Porsche.

The company is obviously focusing its efforts on the car’s hybrid technology and has revealed that the 570 hp 4.6 V8 will be mated to two electric motors which combined with the petrol engine will produce a total of 770 hp – impressive enough.

The 918 Spyder will also feature full carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque with unit carrier, two seats, two-piece Targa roof, fixed roll-over protection system, fully adaptive aerodynamics, adaptive rear axle steering and the upward-venting ‘top pipes’ exhaust system. All designed to showcase Porsche’s dedication to evolving the technology in each geneartion of cars it releases.

Quoted performance figures for the 918 are a top speed of 325 kph (201 mph) and a 0-100 KPH of less than 3 seconds – so on paper at least it is a car that competes right at the top of the performance car league.

No indication of price has been given by Porsche yet but we think it will up there with 458’s, MP4’s and maybe even Aventadors – so it needs to be good!

This (wet) Bank Holiday weekend sees the arrival of Porsche’s new Boxster in UK showrooms with prices starting from £37589 for the basic car and the more powerful ‘S’ starting at £45384.

The car is still recognisable as a Boxster of course given Porsche’s preference for evolutionary rather than revolutionary change in model development but the ‘facelift’ makes it look a lot less like a back-to-front design than the older out-going car. It is certainly easy on the eye and won’t upset die-hard Boxster fans.

Porsche say that the car has been redesigned from the ground up which means that the (already excellent) chassis has been further tweaked and even though the Boxster’s footprint has been slighty enlarged it has actually lost some weight in the process.

The engines have also come in for some attention and power is up for both the the 2.7 (previously a 2.9) and ‘S’ 3.4 litre flat-six motors but fuel economy has also improved by 15 per cent according to Porsche. The extra power apparently has knocked a full 12 seconds off the ‘S’ lap-time at Nurburgring!

Porsche claim this is the fastest version of the Boxster yet and the ‘S’ will sprint to 62 mph from a standstill now in an impressive 4.8 seconds when fitted with the PDK transmission and Sport Chrono options. The 2.7 will take only 0.7 seconds longer to do the same.

Anyone who purchases a new Boxster will be offered a complimentary driving course at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone which is an ideal opportunity to test the new Boxster to a level not possible on a normal roads.
