As motor shows go Top Marques Monaco doesn’t quite fit the norm. For starters it is a cosy affair set up in a modern building called the Grimaldi Forum which is perched right on the edge Monaco’s short stretch of coastline and looks like it is about to be washed away with the Mediterranean tide. Of course it is beautiful and therefore a fitting place for very expensive cars to strut their stuff.

The organisers modestly refer to it as ‘The Most Exclusive Supercar Show in The World’.

It is also a place where you will find be-jewelled watches on display on one level of the complex and then some pretty fancy looking motor cruisers rubbing shoulders on the concourse of the Forum.

However, what makes this show particularly different from others is that you can actually drive (or be driven in) some of the most exotic cars to be found anywhere.

A covered parking area bordering the sreet that runs adjacent to the Grimaldi Forum serves as a kind of makeshift pit-stop where you could see a selection of cars from lamborghini, Noble, GTA, Mercedes and several others all parked patiently for the amateur paparazzi.

Every so often a loud bark could be heard from a Lambo exhaust as the car was driven on to the ‘catwalk’ otherwise known as the Avenue Princesse Grace. A poser’s paradise indeed.

And the show itself? Well very few manufacturers respresent themselves since it is left up to either the local franchise dealership from Monaco or further afield to get on with the business of exhibiting at the event. Some brands, however, are instantly recognisable and several others maybe not so. The role call for 2012 was as follows:-

Bentley, Aston Martin, Delavilla, Gemballa, Fisker, GTA Motor, Hamann, JE Design, PACE, InsiderCars, Jaguar, Koenigsegg, Lamborghini, Lexus, Lotus, McLaren, Mercedes Benz, MTM, MS Design, Mansory, Merdad, Noble, Roding, Pagani, Rolls Royce, Tushek and Dartz.

Some of the cars were just as you would find them in any car showroom but many others had been given some kind of ‘tuning’ treatment to offer somebody who wanted a Panamera, for instance, to end up with a Panamera that wouldn’t look out of place on the front cover of Max Power magazine. It is all a question of personal taste of course but the prices being quoted for these conversions were bordering on insanity. Think of the price of a nicely specified Cayenne and then triple it – and that’s for the ‘cheap’ bespoke options. More than half of the exhibitors at the show were offering their own take on ‘individualism’ for anything from an Evoque to a 450 Spider. Recession? What recession?

Highlights of the show? Well Pagani had their awesome Huayra on display and that is a car which needs no adornment or embellishment to either improve or destroy its looks. It is like a work of art. The design details make you keep looking over and over at the car and every time you look you find something else to make you go ‘wow’. Is there any other car which could draw so much attention right now – probably not.

It was pleasing to see a strong representation of British cars at Top Marques and Noble’s M600 had one of the nicest paint finishes at the show. It’s carbon fibre body was finished in a sort of cobalt blue and the yellow/cream interior contrasted perfectly.

Another odd-ball on show, but one which raised a few smiles, was the Dartz ‘gold-plated’ armoured car that is featured in the forthcoming Sasha Baron Cohen film ‘The Dictator’. This is a proper B7 category armour-plated vehicle and was the most intimidating car on display at the show by a million miles. Tapping on one of the side panels of the car was like tapping the side of building we were standing in. If you were worried about being blown-up on the way to the office then you would buy this car – it looks and feels like it could survive a nuclear blast!

Two days is plenty of time to take in everything the show has to offer and the question is whether to go back again next year. For the show content the jury is still out but if you are bored with the traditional show formats then you should try Top Marques – if you don’t like the show you could do far worse than end up in a place like Monaco!

In the meantime enjoy the slideshow of pics that were taken at the show…………

To mark the launch of the all new event at London ExCeL Top Gear Live is celebrating 40 years of the legendary racing film Le Mans at the exclusive Top Gear Live London Gala on 24 November 2011.

In celebration of the film’s 40th anniversary, which starred Hollywood legend Steve McQueen, guests will gain an unforgettable insight into Le Mans as they watch original clips, view stills and marvel at behind-the-scenes footage while sharing the memories of those who were there.

VIP guests will also be joined by Chad McQueen, son of the late Steve Mc Queen, and racing legends Derek Bell and David Piper, as they reminisce on the making of the film – where both risked their lives as they brought to life McQueen’s dream: to create the best, most realistic film about motorsport ever.

Le Mans, which used cutting-edge techniques and filmed largely live, featured the Porsche 917 and the Ferrari 512 and is remembered for its breathtaking footage from the actual 1970 race.

This iconic piece of cinematography, which featured 26 high performance cars, 41 stunt drivers and some 350,000 French speaking extras, uniquely captures the exhilarating atmosphere of arguably the greatest race on earth.

Guests will also have an exclusive opportunity to get up close to David Piper’s original 1969 Porsche 917 which will be on display at the gala event.

It’s Ford’s 100th birthday and fans will find plenty to peruse, at this year’s Footman James Classic Motor Show when it returns to Birmingham’s NEC from 11-13 November.

There’s plenty of variety on the Mk1 Cortina Owners Club stand, with a 2-door Super, ‘woody’ Estate, Zetec-engined saloon, Lotus Cortina, and the club’s Supreme Champion, a 1200 ‘fleet’. Jim Scott’s superb 1200 won’t be on the club stand this year. It’s so good; it’s in the Meguiars display.

That fifties favourite, the 100E, has a broad appeal and the 100E Owners Club is embodying this by presenting a Popular, a Prefect, and the 300E Thames Van that appeared in the 1997 Heartbeat Xmas special. For fans of tuned classics, there’s a Pinto-powered 100E and a 2.8 V6 300E.

Around 1.3 million Anglias and variants were made, and quite a few will be on the Anglia 105E Owners Club stand. Well 8 actually! The club is exhibiting two highly-tuned saloons, a Standard saloon, two Deluxe versions, a Super, a Van, and a Standard Estate, which, like its saloon counterpart, truly defines no-frills motoring!

The MkIII Zephyr and Zodiac Owners Club has chosen four models from this capable and capacious range, namely a Zephyr 4, Zephyr 6, Zodiac, and Zodiac Estate. The featured Zephyr 6 was passed from father to son and the immaculately-restored Zodiac saloon has been in the same family for 28 years.

Much loved by families and fleet managers, the Mk3 took the Cortina into the 1970s. The Mark Three Cortina Owners Club is showcasing a Savage V6 replica, Crayford Convertible, Estate, 1300L, and a 1600 Basic. And there’s a twist! Each car will be occupied by life-size and suitably-attired manikins.

It’s ‘Win on Sunday, sell on Monday’ for the AVO Owners Club with one half of the stand set out to represent a rally stage, complete with two muddy Mexicos, mud, grass, and hay. Sideways to victory! The other half is a showroom with pristine sale cars.

The Corsair always cut a dash and the Ford Corsair Owners Club is bringing along some of the very best, including a 1500 Deluxe, a fully-restored 2000E, a 3-litre V6-engined 2000E and a Cosworth-engined Estate.

Amongst the seven cars on the Ford Granada Mk1 & Mk2 Drivers Guild’s stand will be a Granada Mk2 hearse, ‘sans’ coffin but with a wonderful collection of scale-model Granadas laid out instead! There’ll also be a Coleman Milne-converted Granada Mk1 Minster, the only example currently on the road.

The 1600E is plush, perky, nimble, and much sought after. Which is why the Cortina MkII and 1600E Owners Club is presenting two stunning examples. They’ll be accompanied by a modified Estate, a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’. Swift but subtle!

The Footman James Classic Motor Show is open from 10am until 7pm on Friday, 9am until 7pm on Saturday, and 9am until 5.30pm on Sunday. Ticket prices range from £17.50 when purchased in advance, or £20.50 on the door. For more information visit www.necclassicmotorshow.com.
